SummaryElias and Laia are running for their lives. After the events of the Fourth Trial, Martial soldiers hunt the two fugitives as they flee the city of Serra and undertake a perilous journey through the heart of the Empire.

Laia is determined to break into Kauf—the Empire’s most secure and dangerous prison—to save her brother, who is the key to the Scholars’ survival. And Elias is determined to help Laia succeed, even if it means giving up his last chance at freedom.

But dark forces, human and otherworldly, work against Laia and Elias. The pair must fight every step of the way to outsmart their enemies: the bloodthirsty Emperor Marcus, the merciless Commandant, the sadistic Warden of Kauf, and, most heartbreaking of all, Helene—Elias’s former friend and the Empire’s newest Blood Shrike.

Bound to Marcus’s will, Helene faces a torturous mission of her own—one that might destroy her: find the traitor Elias Veturius and the Scholar slave who helped him escape…and kill them both.

my thoughts

Hey, book dragons! So I just finished “A Torch Against the Night“. I loved “an Ember in the ashes” and knew I wanted to continue this series. but like most things in life, it took me a bit of time to get back into this series but I am glad I jumped back in. I listened to it on audiobook and I really love all the voice actors and the way this book is set up.

The character development in this book was well done. We got to see all the characters face hard times and have to adapt. Now without giving away anything from book 1, we do see the struggles and the victories that our characters experience.

All in all the plot f this book was well done, I mean if you have read book 1, you know exactly how Sabaa writes. Well in this book she didn’t flatter on that occasion at all. The emotions she displayed in her writing came across very strongly in the storyline. I will be honest I felt like I was breaking along with the characters at points all throughout this book.

The audiobook was amazing as well. I have gotten really into audio books of late. They allow me to keep reading but also be able to do something else at the same time.

We have the same voice actors as in the first book,  I couldn’t be happier with the choices for them. they each are able to embody the character they are reading and give me life if you will. I know for myself I love it when a book is a full cast. It adds a whole new element.

So if you pick this book up or even start this series off with book 1, expect to be challenged, your emotions to be ripped apart and to find a series you will love.

Till the next book, have a great day. And I’ll see you later at the Nook
